A wonderful week

We had a wonderful week here. Great spot for all ages 3 to 80! The pond was a hit with the kids - lots to catch! The house is very comfortable and well supplied. Fires in the Great Hall on a cool night were an added treat. The huge dining table made for comfortable meals. Thanks!

Merrill House Wedding

We are so grateful to Nick, Bert & Becky for sharing the Merrill House with us for our wedding.  It was absolutely perfect.  The weather was beautiful, the grounds were picturesque, and the house brought our two families together.  We could not have imagined a better day.  We lounged and shared stories in the Great Hall, took in the breathtaking views on the porch, and dared to rope-swing into the pond (even the bride!)  Thank you so much.  We've made incredible memories here and will surely be back to make more!  ~Brittani and Brian

Return trip for bicycling

Our second trip here for our annual bicycle trip to the White Mountains.  The house is a true gem - history, ambiance, scenic beauty, and location.  We had 21 riders from the Portland area this year, spending 3 days and 2 nights at the Merrill House.  Highlight? It's a toss-up between the beautiful rides and fantastic meals provided by the Good Food Store and served by Bert and Becky.  Thanks for keeping this place going!  Steve

Smallcomb Family Reunion - Take Two!

Thank you again for allowing our family to share some great memories at this house. We were here as a family in 2012 and loved it so much that we came back! The weather all week was great - we enjoyed the large porch to watch all the activities happening on the lawn. We are a very active family - volleyball, badminton, swimming, rope-swinging, motorbiking, fire pitting, bb-target practice, bike riding, golf practice, Frisbee golf, etc. Indoors for ping-pong, Great Hall games, sing alongs, and at the dining table for a great lobster bake! We went to Devil's Den and jumped off the cliff! We floated down a river on inner-tubes, and hiked to the waterfall on the Cataracts Trail. Thank you again and maybe our paths will cross again! Amazing and wonderful!

I don't think I've ever experienced a place with such a rich history that was, at the same time, so full of love, life and happiness. I feel so blessed to be here when the clouds roll in, dark and brooding, only to pass through, leaving us with a new appreciation for the beautiful sunshine and blue sky! You are all amazing and wonderful people! Thank you!

My Daughter's Wedding

My daughter got married in Rumford but we rented the Merrill House from Wednesday to Sunday and had daily activities.  It slept all our family, it was so nice to be detached from the world for awhile.  No TV and little reception was just what the doctor ordered.  Fires in the Great Room Every night with the whole family was stupendous!!!  Bert and Becky were awesome and very knowledgeable of the house and the area history!!!  We will have amazing memories for the rest of our life from this house, we cried we didn't want to leave.  Thank You for renting your loving summer home to us!!!

Family Gathering

The Merrill House was a perfect location for our family.  Seeing grandchildren ages 15 to 8 run, jump, swing, swim, play ball on the grounds was so delightful.  The house filled our needs and we ate dinner together every night.  We also took some hikes, canoe rides on the Androscoggin, a day at Ellis Pond, and s'mores in the fire pit.  Bert and Becky were delightful. The home and grounds were perfect for our active family. The bedrooms were sufficient, we were able to eat dinner together in the dining room. The grounds allowed for many activities including the rope-swing into the pond, the fire pit at night plus the large great room with a fireplace on a cold evening. The history of the house is also amazing. We were able to also go on hikes and canoe trips in the vicinity.  A great vacation spot.I'm so glad we had this opportunity - thank you and your family!

Bicycle Adventure

We chose the Merrill House for our annual "Windham to the Whites" cycling weekend, and could not have been more pleased.  We had 21 riders this year and the location was a home run, the best spot we've had in 19 years of doing this event.  The combination of the house, blue sky weather for 3 straight days, great home cooking, and fantastic riding made for a great outing.  One hidden gem of the trip was the 100-mile "century loop" thru Oquossuc, Wilson's Mills, and Errol which is one of the best in the northeast.  Andover is the perfect starting place since it's on the south end, and the ride includes the spectacular vistas of Rangeley's Height-of-Land and the north side of Grafton Notch.

Our visit to Maine

Our family of sixteen stayed at the Merrill House in Andover, Maine, for two weeks earlier this year and loved it! We have always appreciated the beautiful Maine homes we have seen all over the state, but the Merrill House is definitely the most fantastic home we have yet seen. Our family is involved in several television projects and did some filming at the home and the surrounding region, and it made for a wonderful setting. We especially enjoyed the spacious Great Hall - it was the perfect meeting place for our crowd. Back home, many of our sons have a wedding photography and videography business, and they recognized this home as a perfect spot for a destination wedding. In fact, we are advertising it to our local folks who are looking for a unique place for their special celebration, as this home can accommodate such a large amount of guests. Also, the caretakers, Becky and Bert, are very helpful and considerate in keeping the home looking fresh and clean.

A memory making treasure!

We were married at the first Congregational church in Andover, Maine.  We had guests that traveled from all over the United States to attend the ceremony and reception.  Many of them stayed at each of our homes in Maine during their time here.  But, we really wanted a special place to hold our rehearsal dinner.  We wanted to specially thank our wedding attendants and special family members.  The Merrill House was not far from our hometown of Rumford so it fit our size and location needs.  We had no idea at the time what a perfect choice it would turn out to be.  The stay at Merrill House was way beyond terrific!  Our families came together there for the first time and everyone loved the home and also each other!  It was the beginning of our family friendships.  The home's atmosphere just added so much to our rehearsal dinner and visits with one another.  The house sang with laughter and tears of happiness during our time there.  We will always remember the time we shared there with joy.  We shared great food in the spectacular dining room, played board games and enjoyed the warmth of the fireplace in the game room, and visited comfortably in the spacious surroundings.  Together we marveled over the history of the home found and ourselves often sitting quietly in awe over the treasure before us.  The evening after the wedding, us 2 newlyweds chose the smaller of the 2 kitchens to sit and open our gifts.  We listened to Faith Hill sing "Wish for you" and we cried tears of gratitude for the generosity of our friends and family and also for the homeowners.  It is a wonderful thing they have done to choose to open their treasure for the public to rent.  Because of them making this home available, many of us have shared a bonding experience that will follow us through all our days ahead.  This home reaches you right to the core and touches your heart and soul.  You arrive in your everyday manner and you leave there with joy in your heart.  The time spent at the Merrill House will always be one of life's best moments.  The house brought the past into our present day lives and we are thankful to the owners for allowing us to share a piece of their history.  There are not enough kind words to be said for the home, the owners or the caretaker.  This house is tended by love ...every spec of the grounds and home will wrap its arms around you comfort you in its warmth.  We already long to return!  With gratitude and many thanks, Valerie & Joseph Mcguire

Magical trip back in time

The house is a fantastic historic home, filled with articles of a time gone by when people did jigsaw puzzles on a rainy summer day, or walked across the way to swim or fish in the river. We picked blueberries and then baked pies (and enjoyed a few from the amazing caretakers Becky and Bert too). We kayaked in Bethel, canoed on Lake Richardson and climbed the old Appalachian trail up to the flume. We had a great time! Can't wait to go back next summer.

Magical Experience

My family reunion of 25 - including my mother, seven sisters, 4 brothers-in-law, all of our children aged 28 to 12 all had a wonderful time staying at the Merrill House.  There are rolling hills, lovely grounds, a rope swing, gorgeous hikes, friendly caretakers and plenty of space and accommodations for everyone.  The house itself has a very special, lived-in ambiance with so much history.  Every room is unique and interesting. It makes it easy to forget about the normal hectic pace of everyday life and really relax.  This was the best reunion we have ever had, thanks to the owner 's and Becky and Bert's accessibility and helpfulness.  It was just great!

Cogliano Wedding

Thank you for such an amazing experience. Last night we married here at the Merrill House, with 30 of our closest family members present. It was a breath-taking view from the top of the hill, where we said our vows. The house itself is filled with history, warmth, and love. We are so fortunate to be able to be part of that. Warmly, the "new" Dr. & Mrs. John Cogliano

Precious Moments

We rented the property to host our wedding reception in honor of our marriage!  The property was amazing!  Everyone who stayed here immensely enjoyed their stay.  The caretakers were wonderful and very accommodating!  It was a gorgeous weekend for an outdoor reception and the property was beautiful.  Our wedding pictures came out amazing as well!  The boys were able to relax with some fishing at the small pond and the rehearsal dinner was gorgeous as well!  It was very much my dream wedding and words cannot express how grateful I am to have the opportunity to rent this property!  I hope to rent again in the future when we have children!!!  Thank you so much to the family for sharing your childhood home!  It was neat to have watched the movie that was filmed at the property as well!  The home was a very unique, enriching experience for all!!!!  I hope that future renters will appreciate your beautiful home as much as we did this past weekend!  Thank you!

Beautiful place!

We rented the house for a week for my parent's 50th anniversary.  The setting is every bit as beautiful as it looks in these pictures.  The setting is private and scenic with mountain views.  It had plenty of room, and as there were 20 of us, we really appreciated the space.  The dining room was elegant for a sit-down dinner and the caretaker baked a beautiful cake for us.  Both the owner and the caretakers were very accommodating and helpful.  We kayaked on the nearby river and enjoyed the wildlife, including the MOOSE that visited the property.  Highly recommended.
